Originally built in 1913 as rental apartments the building was later purchased in 1937. Obras Sanitarias de la Nación a state water and sanitation company used it to house administrative employees. Following privatization in 1996 the building was transferred to the National Culture Secretariat. Initially intended to host the National Museum of Asian Art its destiny changed. The Bicentennial of the May Revolution of 1810 inspired a new vision.
The Casa Nacional del Bicentenario project emerged thanks to the initiative of José Nun. He led the cultural office under President Néstor Kirchner. A generous grant of €300,000 from the Spanish Embassy fueled the ambitious remodeling project. This transformation cost around US$1.7 million. President Cristina Kirchner formally inaugurated the Casa Nacional del Bicentenario on March 16 2010.
More than just a museum the Casa Nacional del Bicentenario is a vibrant cultural hub. Its 3500 square meters house a historical library a captivating continuous video display. Entitled Muchas voces una historia Argentina 1810-2010 it details Argentina’s history. There is also an open-air theater temporary exhibit halls digitalized archives and production studios. The educational television channel Encuentro uses the studios.
