The building itself has a history. In the 17th century, this house was built in the San Roque neighborhood. It features a courtyard. The courtyard sits at the heart of the building.
Notice the entrance. It once led to street-facing shops. Camilo Ponce Enriquez was born and lived here. He later became President of Ecuador from 1956 to 1960. By 1994, the house was in ruins. It became a project for cooperation between Quito and Andalusia. Technicians from both regions collaborated. They previously worked on the Casa de los Siete Patios.
The project resulted in 22 homes and shops. The existing building was restored to create 14 homes and two shops. A new section was added at the back for eight more homes. This approach was inspired by similar projects in Andalusia. Think of the Casa de Hernan Cortes in Seville. Or the Casa del Saltillo in Carmona.
