Imagine stepping through a small door on a busy Lisbon street and suddenly finding yourself transported to a stunning Moorish palace. This is Casa do Alentejo. It is a hidden gem that is waiting to be discovered.

Casa do Alentejo is more than just a building. It is a vibrant cultural center with a rich history. It was created a century ago as a meeting place for people from the Alentejo region. The Alentejo is a historical province of Portugal. “Além Tejo” means beyond the Tagus. Many people from this region sought a better life in Lisbon. Casa do Alentejo became their haven.

The palace itself dates back to the 17th century. However, significant alterations in 1918 shaped its current appearance. Today, it serves as the headquarters for the association of Alentejo people. It is a place where they can preserve and celebrate their unique culture.

As you wander through Casa do Alentejo, notice the beautiful tiles. These azulejos are a hallmark of Portuguese culture. The word “azulejo” comes from the Arabic “az-zulayj” meaning polished stone. These tiles adorn cafes, churches, palaces and houses throughout Portugal. They tell stories of history and artistry.

Casa do Alentejo is alive with activity. On Saturdays, enjoy “Alentejo afternoons” with choral groups singing Cante Alentejano. This is a traditional singing performed by amateur groups without instruments. On Sundays, the ballroom fills with people dancing. Mostly elderly people come to socialize.

If you are looking for a taste of Alentejo, dine in one of the picturesque restaurants. Open fireplaces and stunning tiles create a warm atmosphere. Try Carne de Porco à Alentejana. This is a traditional pork dish with clams, potatoes and coriander. For dessert, savor Sericaia com ameixas de Elvas. It is a conventual sweet with Elvas plum jam.

Do not miss the handicraft shop. It has typical products from the Alentejo region. Also explore the library with its collection of books.

In 2023, Casa do Alentejo celebrated its 100th anniversary. A Fountain of Friendship was inaugurated. It was designed by the Moorish sculptor Jorge Pé-Curto.

Casa do Alentejo offers a wonderful escape from the tourist crowds. It is a place where locals gather and visitors are welcome. Enjoy the culture of the Alentejo. Savor the food. Admire the architecture. Casa do Alentejo is a true treasure in the heart of Lisbon.
