“Music is the universal language of mankind” is a saying that takes on a special meaning here at the Casa de la Música Gi & Hans Neustaetter. This isn’t just a concert hall. It’s a testament to love, resilience, and the unifying power of music.
The Casa de la Música is the result of the union of two prestigious cultural entities. These are the Philharmonic Society of Quito and the Casa de la Música Hans and Gi Neustaetter Foundation.
Built in 2003, this building is directed by the Philharmonic House of Music Hans & Gi Neustaetter Foundation. It has been praised for its exterior architecture and interior acoustics. The famous German company Müller-BBM gave it the highest rating for sound intensity and clarity.
But there is much more to the Casa de la Música. Hans and Gi Neustaetter were a Jewish couple from Munich. They fled Nazi persecution in 1935. They sought refuge in Quito. They then dedicated their lives to giving back to the country that had welcomed them.
Gi, with no prior experience, started making elegant hats for ladies. Soon, she opened the famous boutique “Para Ti”. It became a fashion reference in Quito. Hans became a successful businessman. He founded several companies in Ecuador.
Despite their success, Hans and Gi never forgot their past. They supported many noble causes. They provided medical assistance and improved living conditions. They were passionate about music, art, and education.
They started granting scholarships to Ecuadorian students. They helped develop musical activity in Quito. Gi began building three major works for Quito. These were the Feliz Hogar nursing home, the orchid garden, and the Casa de la Música.
Gi Neustaetter passed away shortly before the Casa de la Música was completed. Her dream was to provide a world-class venue for symphonic music. She wanted a place where music lovers could socialize.
The Casa de la Música features a concert hall with 700 seats. It also has a recital and conference room with 80 seats. The German firm Müller BBM Acoustics followed the planning and execution. They used a 3D model to analyze sound frequencies. This ensured the best possible acoustics.
Today, the Casa de la Música hosts concerts. These feature national and international artists. It offers recitals and opera programs. It promotes art and culture in Quito. It is one of the best concert halls in South America.
The Casa de la Música stands as a symbol. It embodies the Neustaetters’ gratitude to Ecuador. It showcases their commitment to music. It also provides a space for artistic expression. Here, music transcends boundaries. It enriches lives.
