In the heart of Palma de Mallorca, an industrial giant hums with power. This is the Cas Tresorer Power Station, a key player in Mallorca’s energy story. Cas Tresorer wasn’t always the gas-powered giant it is today. Construction began in 2005, with the first two General Electric gas turbines coming online in 2006. Initially, these turbines ran on diesel, generating 154 MW. A steam turbine joined the team in 2007, completing the first combined cycle. The Cas Tresorer Power Station was initially fueled by diesel. A major shift occurred in 2008 with the arrival of the Península–Illes Balears gas pipeline. This pipeline brought natural gas to the Balearic Islands, and Cas Tresorer switched to this cleaner fuel source. The second phase of construction, completed in 2010, saw the addition of two more GE gas turbines and another Siemens steam turbine. This boosted the Cas Tresorer Power Station’s total capacity to an impressive 480 MW. Today, operated by Gesa-Endesa, Cas Tresorer plays a vital role in meeting Mallorca’s energy needs. The Cas Tresorer Power Station is not just a powerhouse of the present. It’s also looking towards the future. The plant is a participant in the Green Hysland Hydrogen infrastructure project. This innovative project aims to make Mallorca a leader in green hydrogen technology. Cas Tresorer is poised to become one of the first power plants in Spain to use hydrogen for electricity generation. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the Cas Tresorer Power Station will continue to shape Mallorca’s energy landscape for years to come.
