Did you know that George Washington Carver, a prominent African American scientist, inspired the name for this park? It’s called Carver Park and it’s a bustling space filled with different amenities. This park sits right next to the Chicago Housing Authority’s Altgeld Gardens housing development and the George Washington Carver School. This 20-acre space was established in the mid-20th century when the Chicago Park District recognized the need for recreational areas in the Riverdale community. You see, in the 1940s, the Altgeld Gardens housing development was constructed, which greatly increased population density in the area. The Chicago Park District acquired land from the housing authority in the early 1950s, paving the way for the creation of Carver Park. Its history is tied to the growth of the Riverdale community. Today, Carver Park is a vibrant space, offering a gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, fitness center, boxing ring, and multi-purpose clubrooms. The park also boasts a playground, baseball diamonds, a batting cage, a sand volleyball court, basketball courts, and three picnic groves, providing something for everyone. So take a moment to appreciate the history of this park and the dedication it represents to the community.
