Excellence is expected here at Carver Military Academy. That’s not just a motto. It’s a guiding principle etched into the very fabric of this institution.

Carver Military Academy stands as a testament to transformation and opportunity. Originally named George Washington Carver Area High School, it opened its doors in 1947. The school served as a neighborhood high school. It primarily accommodated residents of the Altgeld Gardens Homes public housing complex.

However, by the late 1990s, the school faced challenges. Poor academic performance and low attendance threatened its existence. In 1998, a remarkable shift began. Chaplain Lt. Colonel Antonio R. Daggett, Sr. stepped in. He was tasked with transitioning the school into a military academy.

Imagine the discussions. Picture the community meetings. Feel the weight of expectation as the school reinvented itself. By August 2000, Carver Military Academy High School emerged. It welcomed a freshman class of 250 cadets. The first graduating class of this new academy crossed the stage in June 2004.

Col. Daggett’s influence extended beyond the curriculum. He championed the academy’s focus on community service. He wanted to address the community’s needs. His vision shaped Carver’s identity. The cadets honored him by naming the flag hall outside the auditorium “Daggett Domains”. This recognized his decision to display all state flags.

Carver Military Academy offers a blend of academics and military discipline. Structured routines instill leadership skills. The JROTC program provides valuable experience. Cadets learn military knowledge. Some may even pursue ROTC scholarships for college.

Carver competes in the Chicago Public League. The sports teams are known as the Challengers. The boys’ varsity basketball team claimed the IHSA championship in 1962-1963. This victory followed a runner-up finish the previous season.

Several notable alumni have walked these halls. Jason Avant played football for the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. Terry Cummings starred at DePaul and played 18 seasons in the NBA. Yolanda Griffith excelled in both the ABL and WNBA. She is now a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Tim Hardaway was a five-time NBA All-Star. He is also a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Cazzie Russell, a former University of Michigan star, was the number one pick in the 1966 NBA draft.

Carver Military Academy remains dedicated to providing a rigorous education. The school fosters leadership skills. It empowers cadets to become active citizens.
