Did you know Carver County is considered the happiest place in America? That’s right. This isn’t just any county. Carver County is a place steeped in history and brimming with surprising facts.

Carver County was founded on February 20 1855. It was named for explorer Jonathan Carver. He traveled to the Minnesota River in 1766-67. He even wintered among the Sioux near New Ulm.

Before settlers arrived Carver County was home to Native Americans for thousands of years. Dakota people named places like Waconia and Chanhassen. These names reflect the area’s natural beauty. French explorers also came to Carver County. They developed strong relationships with the Dakota people.

The fur trade was significant here. The North West Fur Trading Company had a post south of the city of Carver. Jean-Baptiste Faribault ran it with his family. Treaties in 1851 opened Carver County to white immigration. However many whites had settled illegally before the treaties.

Interestingly Carver County has been ranked as Minnesota’s healthiest county for several years. Smart Asset even ranked it the number one “Happiest Place in America” in 2018. This was based on factors like low unemployment and poverty rates. High marriage rates also contributed.

The landscape here is beautiful with rolling hills and dotted with lakes. The Minnesota River flows along the southern border. Carver Creek flows through the central area. Agriculture is a key part of Carver County.

The county has a total area of 376 square miles. 354 square miles is land. 22 square miles is water. Carver County is Minnesota’s second-smallest county by land area.

Carver County is home to seven lakes that are 235 acres or larger. Lake Waconia is the largest. It is the Twin Cities’ second-largest lake.

The county seat Chaska has seen temperatures from a low of -41F to a high of 105F. Average monthly precipitation ranges from 0.66 inches in February to 5.05 inches in August.

The earliest settlers came from the eastern United States. Later immigrants arrived from Germany Ireland and Sweden. They brought their traditions and names for new towns. For example the Germans named Hamburg Gotha and Cologne.

Chaska once had a booming brick industry. Its distinctive yellow brick was well-known. While farming is still important many residents commute to the Twin Cities for work.

Today Carver County is governed by a Board of Commissioners. Each commissioner represents a district. The county continues to grow and evolve. It balances its rich history with a bright future.

Carver County truly offers a unique blend of history natural beauty and community spirit. It is no wonder people are happy to call it home.
