Established in 1954 as Carshalton Technical Institute, Carshalton College stands as a testament to evolving educational needs. For over 60 years, Carshalton College has been a cornerstone of vocational education in Sutton.

Originally designed for 1,200 students aged 15 to 18, the institute cost £120,000. Engineering plus general education were the first departments. Women’s subjects were also taught. Eleven full-time lecturers and 50 part-time staff supported these areas.

Now part of the South Thames Colleges Group, Carshalton College has a rich history. The college’s strong local presence and thriving vocational curriculum makes it popular. Construction and creative industry courses are especially strong here.

The college expanded in 1960. This expansion cost £136,000. It doubled the facility’s size. “Block release” training schemes developed in the 1960s. These schemes are similar to today’s apprenticeship programs. Students worked and attended the Institute one day a week. Similar programs still provide access to further education.

A further extension opened in 1970. Sir Barnes Wallis opened the extension. Wallis developed the bouncing bombs. This £287,000 extension included a new mechanical engineering block. It also included a communal block. The communal block provided a refectory, library, and student common room. Several classrooms were created plus a language laboratory. The extension doubled the college size. It accommodated 3,000 students. 450 students were enrolled on full-time courses.

Carshalton College continues to evolve. The Technology, Engineering and Construction Centre opened in June 2016. This £10 million investment created an amazing learning space. The TEC Centre uses state-of-the-art sustainable technologies. It consolidates construction and motor vehicle areas. Over 900 students benefit from this modern facility.

Carshalton College joined the South Thames Colleges Group. Merton College, Kingston College, and South Thames College are included. Carshalton College maintains its local focus. Its vocational curriculum remains strong.

Many notable alumni have passed through Carshalton College. Musician James Ash honed his craft here. Politician Paul Burstow developed his skills here. Diplomat Qubad Talabani started his journey here. Musician Plastician made music here. Author Jacqueline Wilson penned stories here.

Carshalton College offers high-quality vocational education at all levels. It is close to Sutton and Croydon and is easily accessible from South London. The college is in an attractive area with lots of green spaces. Parks and the Carshalton ponds are close by. This setting creates an inspiring learning environment. Carshalton College remains dedicated to helping students discover their path.
