Nestled amidst the vibrant landscape of northwestern Hillsborough County lies Carrollwood. This charming community spans ten square miles. Its story intertwines with the history of Tampa. Carrollwood borders the picturesque, spring-fed Lake Carroll. Both lake and suburb likely draw their names from Charles Carroll of Maryland. A signer of the Declaration of Independence, Carroll was purportedly a friend of early European settlers near the lake. Carrollwood emerged as a haven from the bustling city. In 1959, Tampa native Matt Jetton spearheaded its development. He later expanded it with Carrollwood Village in 1970. Jetton envisioned a unique community with curved streets, a departure from the conventional grid pattern. This innovative design garnered national recognition. In 1961, the National Association of Home Builders named Carrollwood the “U.S. Subdivision of the Year.” Parents magazine further lauded it with the “Best Homes for Families with Children Award.” Initially, Carrollwood was a popular vacation spot for Tampa residents seeking lakeside retreats. It also attracted prominent figures like John Allen, the first president of the University of South Florida. The proximity to USF, less than ten miles away, made Carrollwood an ideal location for university employees. The development of road networks further enhanced Carrollwood’s accessibility. It brought essential amenities like grocery stores, schools, and shops. Townhomes and condos complemented the existing single-family homes. Carrollwood Village boasts the Carrollwood Country Club. This private club features a 27-hole championship golf course and a 50-room condo resort. Carrollwood has retained its tranquil, small-town atmosphere. Parks, Vista Gardens, and the Carrollwood Cultural Center contribute to this ambiance. Two parks within Carrollwood Village offer tennis courts, playgrounds, and basketball courts. Modern shopping malls offer a diverse range of retail, services, and dining experiences. These include Carrollwood Village Shoppes, Village Center, Palms of Carrollwood Shopping Center, and Carrollwood Commons. Educational options cater to various needs, from Carrollwood Elementary School to private institutions like Corbett Preparatory School of IDS. Carrollwood Village Park offers a wealth of amenities for all ages. A dog park, fitness equipment, picnic shelters, trails, and a skate park provide recreational opportunities. Children can enjoy the splash pad and playground. Outdoor games like chess, ping pong, and cornhole add to the fun. The Carrollwood Cultural Center stands as a community hub. It hosts classes, events, camps, and clubs for all ages. Its facilities include indoor and outdoor stages, art studios, an art gallery, a computer lab, and a caterer’s kitchen.
