Carrollton

In 1842 William and Mary Larner became Carrollton’s first known settlers. Their arrival marked the beginning of a remarkable journey for this Texas town. Carrollton nestled in Dallas Denton and Collin counties grew from humble beginnings. It transformed from an agricultural community to a thriving suburb. Imagine a time before sprawling suburbs. Carrollton’s early life revolved around farming. This peaceful existence was disrupted by the arrival of the Dallas-Wichita Railroad in 1878. This railroad dramatically altered Carrollton’s destiny. The town’s growth accelerated. It became a vital shipping hub for cotton grain and livestock. Flour mills and cotton gins sprang up. By 1885 Carrollton boasted two churches a school and 150 residents. The town’s population swelled. This continued growth was further fueled by the extension of the railroad to Denton in 1880. The St Louis Southwestern Railway also arrived in 1888. Carrollton surpassed its neighbor Trinity Mills becoming a regional center for trade and commerce. The gravel industry emerging in 1912 further boosted Carrollton’s economy. It transformed the city into a “grain and gravel” town. This was complemented by a brick plant and a dairy industry. National Metal Products also established itself here in 1946. Carrollton officially incorporated in 1913. WF Vinson served as its first mayor. The post-World War II era witnessed an incredible surge in population. Carrollton’s growth was phenomenal. From 1610 residents in 1950 to over 119000 in 2010 its expansion was remarkable. This boom was largely due to suburban growth spilling over from Dallas. Carrollton’s rise continued. It earned recognition as a desirable place to live in the 2000s appearing on prestigious lists such as Relocate America’s “Top 100 Places to Live”. Money magazine also lauded Carrollton. It ranked it among the best places to live in the United States. Carrollton’s story is one of perseverance adaptation and remarkable growth. It is a testament to the vision and hard work of its pioneers. It’s a story that continues to unfold. Today Carrollton is a vibrant diverse community. It has grown substantially from its humble beginnings. It’s a city that continues to thrive in the heart of Texas.
