Unearthed beneath the Parisian suburbs lie the Carrières des Brillants. These aren’t just ordinary quarries. They’re a testament to time itself. The chalk itself formed at the end of the Cretaceous period. That was between 75 and 70 million years ago. It solidified within an ancient sea. The chalk is overlaid by Meudon limestone. That dates back 65 million years marking the beginning of the Tertiary period. The Carrières des Brillants are unique. They reveal a missing stage of the Cretaceous period that has been eroded elsewhere. This geological anomaly is only visible in this specific location in Ile-de-France.
But the geological story doesn’t end there. The Carrières des Brillants also display evidence of tectonic activity. A fault line runs through the quarries. This is an extension of the Seine River fault. This fault guided the river’s course. The fault line influenced the development of karst features within the quarries. These features include impressive cave formations. Water seeping from the surface has created draperies stalactites gours cave pearls. Incredibly rare clay forests have also formed within the Carrières des Brillants.
The Carrières des Brillants were more than just a source of chalk. They have served various purposes throughout history. A concrete casting company exploited the quarries’ unique humidity and temperature. The exceptional acoustics of the galleries have been used for recordings. A Gregorian chant recording was even made in the Carrières des Brillants.
Today the Carrières des Brillants face a significant threat. A geotechnical study in 2017 concluded that the hill is unstable. A project to fill 45% of the quarry’s surface is underway. This threatens to compromise access to this unique site. This incredible scientific and artistic heritage is under threat. The Carrières des Brillants stand as a reminder that even the most impressive structures are vulnerable. Their fate rests in the balance. Their future remains uncertain. Their preservation is a race against time.
