The Carrefour du 8 Mai 1945 is a crossroads in Malakoff, a commune in the Hauts-de-Seine department of France. It is located just outside of Paris. On this momentous day, after having signed the Act of Military Surrender in Reims on May 7, German military representatives went to Berlin on the night of May 8, to sign the official surrender. It’s said that the news of the surrender reached Paris on May 8, at 3 p.m. and the bells from every Parisian church rang to celebrate the news. The streets of Paris were flooded with people, singing La Marseillaise, celebrating the victory with a great sense of euphoria and the end of the war. You can imagine the joy and the relief on the faces of people who had suffered under the Nazi regime. They were finally free.
