“The echoes of their sacrifice still whisper through these woods.” The Carrefour de la Résistance et de la Déportation stands before us. It’s a quiet crossroads. Yet it holds the weight of a tragic history. Before World War II, this place was a simple crossroads. It was known as the Carrefour d’Orleans. During the war, it became a hub of resistance activity. Young men seeking to avoid forced labor under the Nazi regime found refuge in the surrounding forests. They joined the ranks of the French Resistance. In the summer of 1944, this peaceful forest became a battleground. On August 14th, German forces, alerted to the resistance’s presence, surrounded the Carrefour de la Résistance et de la Déportation. They captured around fifty resistance fighters and civilians. The captives were tragically executed, their sacrifice marking this ground forever.
