Within Carnide Cemetery’s embrace, a unique story unfolds. Carnide Cemetery isn’t your typical cemetery. It’s a garden cemetery, designed by landscape architect Júlio Moreira and architect Guedes Amorim. Opened in January 1996, Carnide Cemetery challenges traditional cemetery concepts. It seamlessly blends into the urban landscape. The cemetery buildings have large windows for natural light. One building houses administrative services. The other offers four viewing rooms and an ecumenical room for various religious funeral ceremonies. Carnide Cemetery provides temporary and perpetual graves, ossuaries, and municipal burial vaults. There are also plots for private mausoleums. Famous Portuguese poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (1919-2004) was buried at Carnide Cemetery before being transferred to the National Pantheon in 2014. Architect Luís Cunha (1933-2019) was also buried here. Carnide Cemetery’s innovative design as a garden cemetery offers a peaceful final resting place, integrated harmoniously with the surrounding urban environment.
