Remember Carmel Presby Church as more than just a building. It is a testament to faith and community. Carmel Presby Church started as a humble family church. It was officially recognised as an independent Presbyterian church on September 28 1984. The church joined the synod of Presbyterian churches in 2010. Now Carmel Presby Church operates under the Chinese Presbyterian arm of Presbyterian churches in Singapore.
Initially Carmel Presby Church lacked its own building. The congregation used the Church of Singapore for worship for a year. Later they moved to Chin Lien Bible Seminary. This was made possible by the late Principal Sister Ng Peck Luan.
For many years Carmel Presby Church did not have its own reverend. Guest speakers, lecturers and pastors from various institutions helped. These institutions included Singapore Bible College, Trinity Theological College and Chin Lien Bible Seminary. Their contributions were invaluable. They devoted their time to prayer meetings, Sunday services and home services. The goal was to spread the gospel and save souls.
In 1991 a significant event occurred. Through God’s grace, Carmel Presby Church purchased a villa. The villa was located by the beach at 167 Jalan Loyang Besar. This villa became their permanent home.
Currently Reverend Eeli Pua serves as the senior pastor of Carmel Presby Church. Carmel Presby Church has a purpose statement. It emphasizes true worship, warm fellowship, discipleship, service and spreading the gospel. Carmel Presby Church aims to be a church that truly worships. It strives to exude warmth and joy. The church builds disciples and encourages everyone to serve. Finally it spreads the gospel to all.
Carmel Presby Church holds bilingual services every Sunday at 10 am. Carmel Presby Church also organizes care groups. These groups foster community and support among members. Several leaders guide the church. Reverend Jeannie Tan and Elders Gan Tjoen Seng. Elder Wong Lup Meng and Elder Susanna Pua contribute to the leadership. Deacons Early Ong and Joseph John Chan serve the church too. Deaconess Ng Lung Chu also plays a vital role.
