Sixty Lee Street. That’s the address. But the real story of Carlton North Primary School begins long before that number was painted on the brick.

Carlton North Primary School didn’t start as a school. It began as the Carlton Stockade. This was in 1873. This building housed prisoners. They worked in a nearby quarry. That quarry became the school’s playground. The Stockade also served the Mental Hygiene Department. Imagine the echoes of history in those walls.

Head teacher Henry Jones inherited quite a challenge. The building was dilapidated. It needed a thorough fumigation with sulphur before it could host students. Despite this he opened the school in July 1873. Two hundred and seventy-six students were enrolled. Quite a feat for such a repurposed location.

The Carlton Stockade was short-lived as a school. By 1877 it was demolished. A new school building rose in its place. The school was renamed Lee Street State School. That name lasted for many years.

The school’s story continues. In 1913 the caretaker’s house was torn down. Workers unearthed underground cells during demolition. An infant school was built on the site. A red brick Edwardian building opened in 1915. This beautiful building houses the Junior classrooms today. It’s a testament to the school’s enduring spirit.

The 1878 building saw major renovations in 1937. The school’s popularity boomed in the 1930s. A wave of migration swelled the student population. Nearly a thousand students attended at its peak. This highlights Carlton North Primary School’s significant role in the community.

In 1970 the school transitioned to a primary school. The school continued to embrace its multicultural identity. Sixteen nationalities were represented. A full-time migrant teacher supported this diversity.

The school has adapted and evolved. Significant renovations took place in 2009 and 2011. A new library and flexible learning spaces opened in 2009. The Junior building’s expansion added two classrooms and a deck in 2011. Enrollment is capped at 300 students reflecting the school’s location and size.

More recently in the 2020s three flagpoles were added. These represent Australia Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They also reflect the school’s commitment to diversity. The flags stand proudly. They are a symbol of the school’s values respect trust resilience and inclusion.

Carlton North Primary School stands today a vibrant community hub. It’s a living testament to its rich and sometimes surprising past. It continues to educate and inspire future generations. The school is a true reflection of its diverse neighborhood.
