What if I told you the Carlson School of Management wasn’t always the impressive structure you see today? The Carlson School of Management, established in 1919, began its journey humbly. Its first dean, George Dowrie, a banking expert from Michigan, welcomed a small group of students. Fewer than 100 applicants met the rigorous standards. This created a close-knit community at the Carlson School of Management. The school quickly gained recognition. In 1920, it became the 18th school accredited by the AACSB. The Carlson School of Management also boasts a fascinating history of physical spaces. It initially lacked a permanent home. Eventually, it found a place in Vincent Hall on the University of Minnesota mall. However, this wasn’t without student protests. The Minnesota Daily even exposed the school’s “slum conditions,” pushing for better facilities. This led to the construction of the modern, state-of-the-art Carlson School of Management building we see today. This impressive 243,000-square-foot facility, dedicated in 1998, houses 33 classrooms and 35 meeting rooms. It even includes a 180-seat lecture hall and a 250-seat auditorium. Later, in 2008, the Carlson School of Management expanded further with the addition of Hanson Hall. This expansion nearly doubled the school’s size and provided a dedicated space for undergraduates. Connected by the Robert Sparboe skyway, Hanson Hall offers modern classrooms, interview rooms, and even a Caribou Coffee. The Carlson School of Management has also been a breeding ground for influential figures. Alumni include Curtis L. Carlson, namesake of the school, and former Wells Fargo CEO John G. Stumpf. From its humble beginnings to its current stature, the Carlson School has played a vital role in shaping business education and leadership. It continues to foster innovation and collaboration within its walls.
