“Four muses, they whispered, graced Carl von Linné.” We stand before the Carl von Linné Monument, a towering tribute to the “Flower King” himself. This isn’t the original, mind you. This imposing bronze figure of Carl von Linné is a copy of the one in Stockholm’s Humlegarden. Unveiled in Lincoln Park in 1891, on Linné’s birthday, it later found a new home here on the Midway Plaisance in 1976, near the University of Chicago’s Harper Memorial Library. The Swedish community of Chicago generously donated the monument, raising over $18,000 for its creation. Originally, four female figures adorned the base, representing the breadth of Linné’s knowledge: zoology, medicine, mineralogy, and botany. Sadly, these figures, crafted from zinc and iron, fell victim to vandalism and the elements. They were removed when the monument moved to the Midway, and their remnants now reside at the Swedish American Museum in Andersonville. Look closely at the statue. Linné is depicted in his traveling clothes, a book in hand, symbolizing his prolific publications. He also holds a Linnaea borealis, a delicate flower he discovered and named after himself. This monument, standing tall at fifteen feet, atop a base that brings it to a total of thirty-nine feet, reminds us of the legacy of Carl von Linné. He revolutionized the way we name and classify the natural world, earning him titles like the “Father of Taxonomy” and the “Prince of Botanists”. Though the muses are missing, their spirit remains, a testament to the multifaceted genius of Carl von Linné.
