Did Carl von Linné ever imagine his likeness would grace the Leipzig Botanical Garden? Here, before the Carl-von-Linné-Büste, we celebrate the man who brought order to the natural world. The Carl-von-Linné-Büste, a 20th-century creation, stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. Cast in bronze and mounted on a high sandstone pedestal, the bust depicts Linné, the “father of modern taxonomy”. The inscription reads “Carl / von / Linné 1707-1778 Founder / of modern / scientific plant / and animal / naming”. The Carl-von-Linné-Büste was crafted in 1982 by Dietmar Lenz. It resides within the serene oasis of Leipzig University’s Botanical Garden. Linné, born in Sweden in 1707, revolutionized the way we categorize and name plants and animals. His system, binomial nomenclature, uses two Latin names – genus and species – to identify each organism. This seemingly simple system brought clarity to the burgeoning field of natural history. Before Linné, plant names were long, descriptive paragraphs. Imagine trying to memorize those! Linné’s impact extended far beyond his innovative naming system. He traveled extensively, collecting and classifying countless species. He inspired a generation of students, his “apostles,” to explore the globe, further expanding our understanding of the natural world. He even inverted Anders Celsius’s original temperature scale, giving us the Celsius scale we use today. So, as you gaze upon the Carl-von-Linné-Büste, remember the man who brought order to the chaos of nature, whose influence we still feel today, right here in Leipzig’s beautiful Botanical Garden.
