Let’s start with a commemorative plaque. It is a small thing, but it can tell us a lot about its subject. The Carl Schädler commemorative plaque sits quietly on a stone wall in the heart of Vaduz. It may seem modest, but it represents a life dedicated to progress and community.

Imagine the year 1850. Carl Schädler was born into a family of physicians in Vaduz. He broke with tradition and chose a different path. He pursued engineering, studying in prestigious institutions like Freiburg im Breisgau, Schwyz, Zurich, and Stuttgart.

His passion soon took him beyond the borders of Liechtenstein. He worked as an engineer in Württemberg, on the construction of the state railway. His talents, however, extended far beyond railways. He became a successful civil engineer, involved in projects such as the road construction from Dornbirn to Alberschwende, river regulation works near Ulm, and the building of critical railway lines in Germany.

He even took on a daring project in Venezuela – a section of the ‘Great Venezuela Railway’ – which included over 50 tunnels, bridges, and viaducts. He completed this difficult job with remarkable speed and accuracy, despite the challenges of unfamiliar surroundings.

His success brought him wealth and recognition. He returned to Vaduz and became a member of Parliament, working tirelessly for the good of his homeland. Schädler’s vision for Liechtenstein went beyond politics. He believed in improving the well-being of his people.

He funded the construction of the Furste steig, a scenic hiking trail on the mountainside above Vaduz. His support for community initiatives and charitable work made his name synonymous with generosity.

It’s remarkable that the Carl Schädler commemorative plaque pays tribute to the full extent of the man’s life – his achievements as a pioneer, his dedication to his community, and his generous spirit. It reminds us that greatness is not measured in grand gestures, but in a sincere commitment to progress and people.
