This imposing statue, nestled between the Zwinger and the Semper Opera House on Dresden’s Theaterplatz, isn’t just bronze and granite. It’s a portal to the vibrant life of Carl Maria von Weber, a musical genius inextricably linked to Dresden. The Carl-Maria-von-Weber-Denkmal captures him mid-instruction, baton poised, as if conducting an unseen orchestra. His left arm rests dramatically on a music stand, index finger raised, while his other hand clutches what appears to be a sheaf of wheat, symbolizing the fruits of his labor. The statue was crafted between 1855 and 1860 by Ernst Rietschel, a local sculptor who understood Weber’s importance to the city. In 1817, Dresden became Weber’s artistic home when he was appointed Kapellmeister to the King of Saxony and director of the German Opera at the Dresden Hoftheater. This appointment, secured with the help of Heinrich Carl Graf Vitzhum von Eckstöt, marked a turning point in Weber’s career, launching him into the upper echelons of the German musical scene.
