Hidden amongst the vibrant green foliage of Myers Park in Auckland, sits the unassuming Caretaker’s House. This quaint cottage, seemingly frozen in time, holds within its walls a captivating story of resilience and renewal. Caretaker’s House isn’t just a charming building. It’s a living testament to Auckland’s rich history, having witnessed the city’s transformation since the 1850s. Originally built by Charles de Thierry, an early French settler, the Caretaker’s House has survived fires, vandalism, and the relentless march of time. In its early years, the cottage stood as one of only two kauri buildings from that era on Queen Street. During the development of Myers Park between 1913 and 1916, the house was thankfully retained. It was modernized, but sadly, its Victorian-era exterior features were removed. For a large part of the 20th century, the Caretaker’s House served as accommodation for council staff and even private tenants until the late 1990s. Then, tragedy struck in 2005. Vandals broke in, setting two devastating fires that severely damaged the interior. The once vibrant cottage was boarded up, seemingly forgotten. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Caretaker’s House was destined for a rebirth. In 2020, Auckland Council began a restoration project. They aimed to preserve the cottage’s heritage and repurpose it as an office for council staff. The restoration process was meticulous. The building was lifted with jacks to reinforce its earthquake resilience. Almost every interior piece was carefully removed, salvaged, and restored where possible. The interior walls were insulated, lined, and repainted. The floors were replaced, the roof was renewed, and the exterior was repainted. Whenever original materials couldn’t be saved, period replacements were sourced. Even some of the original bricks and flooring were reused in other parts of the house. Caretaker’s House stands today as a symbol of Auckland’s commitment to preserving its history. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, beauty and resilience can prevail. As you gaze upon this unassuming cottage, remember the stories whispered within its walls. Appreciate the dedication and craftsmanship that brought it back to life. The Caretaker’s House continues to watch over Myers Park, ready to witness the next chapter in Auckland’s ever-evolving story.
