“Lost Carcosa” is what Sir Frank Swettenham called it. Today, we stand before Carcosa Seri Negara. It is more than just a building. It is a symbol of Malaysia’s rich history.

Carcosa Seri Negara consists of two grand buildings. There is Carcosa and Seri Negara. Carcosa was built first. Seri Negara followed later. They stand side by side. They are on two adjacent hills. These hills are within the Perdana Botanical Gardens.

Carcosa was completed in 1898. It served as the residence for British High Commissioners. Seri Negara, or King’s House, was completed in 1913. It became the official guest house.

But why “Carcosa”? Sir Frank Swettenham named it. He was inspired by “The King in Yellow”. It is a collection of horror short stories. In the book, Carcosa is a mythical city. Swettenham thought the name meant “desirable dwelling”. He combined the Italian words “cara” and “casa”.

The buildings played a key role. They were important during the Malaysian independence movement. Many meetings took place here. The Constitution of Malaysia was drafted in Seri Negara. This happened between 1955 and 1957. The Federation of Malaya Agreement was signed here too. It was signed on August 8, 1957.

After independence, Carcosa Seri Negara became a guest palace. It hosted many important visitors. Queen Elizabeth II stayed here in 1986.

In 1987, the Malaysian government took control again. Carcosa Seri Negara was then transformed into a luxury hotel in 1989. It offered a unique experience. Guests enjoyed colonial architecture and themed service. Carcosa had seven suites each with a personal butler. Seri Negara had six.

One of Carcosa Seri Negara’s trademarks was afternoon tea. It was served in the drawing room. Guests could also enjoy it on the verandah. The verandah overlooked the gardens.

The estate changed hands a few times. In 2017, part of Carcosa Seri Negara became a museum. The Asian Heritage Museum leased the property.

Carcosa Seri Negara has also appeared in films. “Crazy Rich Asians” filmed scenes here. The film used it as the setting for the ancestral Young mansion.

Carcosa Seri Negara stands as a testament. It shows Malaysia’s journey through colonialism to independence. It embodies elegance and historical significance. It remains a landmark. It reminds us of the past. It inspires us for the future.
