You may not know it’s history but there’s a dark truth that lies behind the walls. Did you know the Carcel de Punta de Rieles was formerly a Jesuit property? A place for prayer and study before being converted to a prison. From 1973 to 1985, it became a symbol of oppression and the brutal reality of dictatorship, where political prisoners endured the worst of Uruguayan history.
The military regime used Carcel de Punta de Rieles as a place to detain and torture, a place where people’s spirits were broken, and their voices silenced.
