Imagine a sanctuary of peace amidst the urban hustle. This is Capilla Virgen de la Paz. The Chapel of the Virgin of Peace stands as a testament to faith and hope.
But how did this devotion to the Virgen de la Paz begin? Its roots stretch back to 7th-century Spain. Legend says that in 645 AD Archbishop Ildefonso of Toledo had a vision. The Virgin Mary descended from Heaven. She gifted him a sacred vestment. This event established the devotion to Mary.
Centuries later in 1085 King Alfonso VI reclaimed Toledo from Moorish rule. A peace treaty allowed Muslims to retain the city’s main temple as a mosque. But Christians protested. They wanted their cathedral back.
Conflict arose and King Alfonso returned intending to punish the Christians. However something extraordinary happened. The Moors themselves offered the cathedral back. They saw it as a sign from God. The king then decreed that the Virgin Mary would be venerated under the name Nuestra Señora de la Paz. This means Our Lady of Peace.
Over time devotion to Nuestra Señora de la Paz spread. It reached throughout Spain and Europe. In the Americas each nation evangelized by Spain embraced her. Each major Latin American city built a sanctuary.
Now fast forward to 1859 Argentina. The country was in turmoil. Political divisions threatened to destroy it. In Lomas de Zamora a church project sought divine intervention for peace. They dedicated it to Nuestra Señora de la Paz.
An image of the Virgin was commissioned. A Barcelona sculptor modeled it after a painting by R. Sanzio. Juana Z. de Grigera donated it. In 1860 General B. Mitre laid the church’s cornerstone.
Mitre asked that the Mother of God shower the country with her gifts. It is said that the Virgin answered their prayers. The battles that took place then illuminated a path to peace.
The first part of the temple opened in 1865. The image of Nuestra Señora de la Paz was enthroned. In 1933 the church hosted the 1st International Eucharistic Day. During this event they prayed for the end of the Chaco War. The war ended. People believed this was another grace granted by the Virgin.
Since 1957 this temple has been the Cathedral of the Diocese of Lomas de Zamora. Pope Pius XII declared it so. Nuestra Señora de la Paz is its patron saint.
Today Capilla Virgen de la Paz continues to be a beacon of hope. It is a place where people seek solace and pray for peace. Its history is a reminder of the power of faith. The devotion started centuries ago. It continues to inspire people today. This chapel stands as a testament to the enduring quest for peace in a troubled world.
