The story of Capilla Santa Teresita begins with Father Román Heitman. He was the first parish priest of Las Mercedes. Father Heitman deeply admired Santa Teresa de Lisieux. He oversaw the construction of this chapel. It opened on April 5, 1931. This was just six years after her canonization.
Santa Teresa de Lisieux’s devotion spread throughout France. Father Heitman was one of her most devout spiritual followers. He ensured that the chapel was built in her honor. This makes Capilla Santa Teresita special. It shares a wall with a parish church, the only one of its kind.
María Francisca Teresa Martin Guérin was born in Alençon, France, in 1873. She later became Santa Teresita. Her parents, Louis Martin and Celia Guerin, were both beatified. Teresa was the youngest of five daughters who survived out of nine children. Her early life was happy but marked by loss. Her mother died of cancer when Teresa was only four.
This loss deeply affected Teresa. She became timid and quiet. Despite the love from her father and sisters, she remained hypersensitive. The family moved to Lisieux near her aunt and uncle. When her sister Paulina entered the Carmelite order in 1882, Teresa felt another maternal loss.
In 1886, Teresa experienced a profound conversion. She overcame her extreme sensitivity. Teresa found happiness in pleasing others. In 1888, she entered the Carmelite order. She took the name Teresa of the Child Jesus. Later, she added “and of the Holy Face”.
In the Carmelite order, Teresita delved into the scriptures. She saw the footsteps of Jesus. She was moved by the Old Testament and the maternal love of God. Saint John of the Cross became her spiritual mentor. She understood that her vocation was to love.
Teresa offered herself to God’s Merciful Love. She understood divine justice as always filled with mercy. Her experience of God’s unconditional love grew. She saw the value of small acts done with love. These acts mattered more than seeking merit.
Capilla Santa Teresita continues to be a place of prayer. Every first day of the month a meeting is held. The prayer of the Rosary is prayed. Schedules are posted on social networks and in the parish bulletin board.
