Is that neo-Gothic architecture I see before me? This is the Iglesia de la Virgen del Carmen y Santa Teresita. It is also known as the Iglesia de los Carmelitas. This Roman Catholic parish church stands in the neighborhood of Prado in Montevideo.
The Iglesia de la Virgen del Carmen y Santa Teresita has a story that stretches back nearly a century. Construction began in 1929. It wasn’t completed until 1954. Guillermo Armas and Albérico Isola were the architects.
Originally, the church was under the care of the Carmelites. But in 1995, they leased it to the Archdiocese of Montevideo. The Iglesia de la Virgen del Carmen y Santa Teresita is dedicated to two significant figures. These are Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.
The neo-Gothic style evokes a sense of grandeur. It reminds us of European cathedrals. The church’s design features pointed arches, stained glass windows, and rose windows. The architects, Armas and Isola, worked on a project by Román Berro and Américo Bonaba. Their plan included a basilica-style layout. It features three naves and a transept similar to those found in grand European cathedrals.
Interestingly, the Iglesia de la Virgen del Carmen y Santa Teresita mimics gray stone. It is actually constructed of concrete. This was common for Catholic temples in the first half of the 19th century.
The Iglesia de la Virgen del Carmen y Santa Teresita honors Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus. She was canonized in 1925. Parishioners contributed to the church’s completion.
