“What if I told you this church houses an organ that has serenaded souls for nearly a century?” That’s right. Welcome to the Iglesia y Convento de los Capuchinos also known as Parroquia San Antonio y Santa Clara. This place is more than just a church. It is a historical and cultural landmark in Montevideo.

The Iglesia y Convento de los Capuchinos opened its doors on September 7 1961. But its roots go way back. The Friars Minor Capuchin manage this beautiful site. Their Franciscan presence in Uruguay dates back to colonial times.

The church is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Clare of Assisi. It is more than just a place of worship. It is an educational complex too. The Iglesia y Convento de los Capuchinos started as a college. It has grown to include a museum and an art gallery. There are even recreational facilities. You can find a swimming pool and baths here. These additions enhance the traditional learning spaces.

Architecturally the Iglesia y Convento de los Capuchinos is part of a stunning ensemble. It sits at the intersection of Canelones and Minas streets in the Palermo neighborhood. The church reflects a deep-rooted Franciscan history. The Capuchins are part of a larger province. This province includes Argentina.

Inside the Iglesia y Convento de los Capuchinos prepare to be amazed. A Tamburini organ from 1924 stands proudly. It is one of the largest in Uruguay. Its music enhances the church’s ambiance.

The Capuchin Franciscans are one of three branches of the Franciscan Order. The others are the Conventuals and Observants. The name Capuchin comes from the long hood on their brown cassocks. A key Franciscan symbol is on display here. It shows the crossed arms of Saint Francis and Jesus. A cross above surrounded by clouds completes the image. This symbolizes the spiritual heritage of the Capuchin Franciscans.

The Parroquia San Antonio y Santa Clara was founded in 1870 by the Frailes Capuchinos. The building’s design is a mix of neobaroque and neorenaissance styles. It draws inspiration from the Basilica of San Francisco de Asís in Italy. The church was consecrated in 1880. It was elevated to the status of a parish in 1961.

The church has an imposing facade. Two bell towers adorn it. Pilasters and sculptures decorate the exterior. Inside the church features three naves divided by pillars. The central nave has a barrel vault. The side naves have groin vaults. The high altar is a beautiful neobaroque creation. It houses the image of Saint Anthony of Padua.

The first stone of the church was laid in 1870. In 1885 the three naves of the church and the dome were completed. The tower was finished in 1888. Its five bells were brought from Badine. They were blessed on April 4 1894.

The main altar dates back to 1565. It was originally in a cloistered convent in Genoa. When the convent was demolished the altar was sold. It eventually made its way to Montevideo. The Capuchins acquired it with the help of devotees.

The tower is unique in Uruguay. It is off-center from the building and next to the dome. The tower is tall and decorated in a neoclassical style. The largest bell weighs over two and a half tons.

Today the Hermanos Menores Capuchinos maintain the sanctuary. Nine friars make up the community. Some are studying philosophy. All participate in the daily services. They also help with the soup kitchen. It provides food for vulnerable people. The Iglesia y Convento de los Capuchinos stands as a testament to faith education and architectural beauty. Its rich history and cultural significance make it a must-see in Montevideo.
