Gazing upon the Capilla Ntra. Sra. del Rosario de Pompeya, it’s hard to imagine this grand sanctuary began as a humble chapel in the “neighborhood of the frogs”. In 1895, Father Darìo Broggi, seeing the spiritual needs of the then marshy area of “Los Corrales”, built a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary. He named it after the famed sanctuary in Pompeii, Italy, calling it “Nueva Pompeya”, a name that would eventually become synonymous with the entire neighborhood. The cornerstone of the Capilla Ntra. Sra. del Rosario de Pompeya was blessed in 1896 by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires on land owned by the Vincentian Sisters. The Neo-Gothic Sienese style temple we see today was inaugurated in 1900. However, construction continued for years after, thanks to the arrival of Capuchin friars from Spain. The Capilla Ntra. Sra. del Rosario de Pompeya boasts a striking single clock tower. The naves are adorned with vibrant stained-glass windows imported from the Zeller house in Munich, Germany. In 2000, this beloved church, the Capilla Ntra. Sra. del Rosario de Pompeya, was consecrated as a sanctuary by then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Bergoglio. It has become a cherished site for the city’s faithful, drawing countless visitors. Inside the Capilla Ntra. Sra. del Rosario de Pompeya, a statue of the Virgin of the Rosary, sculpted by Miguel Castellanas in 1914, holds a central place. Flanked by Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Dominic, the polychrome statue has been the focal point of devotion for over a century. Every year, on the 8th of May and the first Sundays of October, the Capilla Ntra. Sra. del Rosario de Pompeya comes alive with celebrations in honor of the Virgin.
