Nestled within the heart of Buenos Aires, the Capilla Divina Providencia whispers tales of faith, generosity, and resilience. This isn’t just a chapel; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Don Orione and the Little Work of Divine Providence. Our story begins in 1935, a time when Don Orione sought a central location in Buenos Aires for his burgeoning work. Providence intervened through the generosity of Damasa Saavedra, a woman decorated by the Pope himself. She gifted a house on Carlos Pellegrini street, complete with a “beautiful and devout” chapel. The Capilla Divina Providencia became the headquarters for the Little Work of Divine Providence in South America. Don Orione celebrated his first mass there on June 28th, 1935, the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The chapel’s altar held a statue of the Sacred Heart, a symbol of Don Orione’s devotion. The Capilla Divina Providencia wasn’t just a place of worship. It served as a temporary home for the first residents of the Cottolengo of Claypole while their building was under construction. This included a diverse group of individuals, from a former priest to a young boy with a disabled arm, all embraced by Don Orione’s charitable mission. Over time, the Capilla Divina Providencia became a hub of activity, attracting people from all walks of life seeking Don Orione’s guidance and blessings. Tragically, on March 17, 1992, the Israeli embassy bombing severely damaged the building. The Capilla Divina Providencia was forced to close its doors. But like a phoenix from the ashes, it was rebuilt and reopened on November 13, 1996. Bishop Mario Bergoglio, who later became Pope Francis, blessed the new chapel. Today, the Capilla Divina Providencia continues to serve as a place of worship and a testament to the enduring power of faith and charity. The modern architecture may have replaced the old “chorizo” style house, but the spirit of Don Orione remains. It’s a place where you can connect with his legacy and experience the ongoing work of the Little Work of Divine Providence.
