Who would have thought a small knot could inspire such devotion? Here at the Capilla Desatanudos in Buenos Aires, we uncover a tale of intertwined destinies. The Capilla Desatanudos isn’t just a chapel; it’s a testament to the power of faith and the enduring human need for solace. The story begins in 1700s Augsburg, Germany, with a painting titled “Maria Knotenlöserin,” meaning “Mary, Untier of Knots.” This Baroque masterpiece depicted Mary untangling a knotted ribbon, symbolizing life’s complexities. The painting resided in St. Peter am Perlach church, largely unknown outside its local community. Fast forward to 1986, a future Pope, then Father Jorge Bergoglio, discovered this image during a visit to Germany. He was captivated by its symbolism and brought back postcards of the painting to Argentina. One of these postcards landed in the hands of artist Ana Betta de Berti. She painstakingly recreated the image, producing four larger copies. One found its home here, in the San José del Talar parish in Agronomía, Buenos Aires, in 1996. The Capilla Desatanudos quickly became a place of pilgrimage. People flock here, drawn by the belief that Mary can intercede and “untie” their personal struggles. The devotion to Mary, Untier of Knots, spread even to the Vatican, thanks to Pope Francis’ personal connection to the image. During his 2015 visit to Argentina, he was even presented with a staff adorned with the image of the Virgen Desatanudos. The Capilla Desatanudos stands as a symbol of hope and intercession. It’s a place where the weight of the world can be symbolically untied, leaving visitors with a sense of peace and renewed faith.
