“Did you know this humble chapel witnessed a miracle?” The Capilla del Milagro de Nuestra Señora de Luján stands before you. It is a testament to faith and a significant historical site. In 1630 a caravan traveling to Santiago del Estero stopped near the Río Luján. They were on the estancia of Don Rosendo. The next morning they tried moving their carts. A miracle occurred. One cart carrying two images of the Immaculate Conception wouldn’t budge. They removed one image. The cart moved.

A slave named Manuel declared the Virgin wished to stay by the Río Luján. He dedicated his life to caring for her. This event gave rise to the devotion of Nuestra Señora de Luján. The Capilla del Milagro honors this miracle. A replica of the image is displayed on its modest altar.

This wasn’t the Virgin’s first home. The original small chapel was built by Rosendo de Trigueros. Years later a wealthy woman Ana de Matos tried to move the image to her own estancia. The image mysteriously returned to its original location several times. This was considered a further miracle. The bishop and governor oversaw a solemn transfer.

In 1974 a book confirmed the miracle site. This is where the Capilla del Milagro was built by Fray Gabriel Marullo. It opened on May 9 1981. The structure is simple yet meaningful. An emblematic arch marks the entrance. A Vía Crucis leads to the altar. The chapel is located on land donated by the Lencina family. It’s close to the area where the original miracle took place.

In 1986 the national government designated the site a National Historic Place. In 2014 the Pilar council declared it a Cultural Heritage site. The Capilla del Milagro de Nuestra Señora de Luján is more than just a chapel. It’s a living testament to a miraculous event. It is a place of enduring faith and cultural significance.
