Tucked between the Viaducto Miguel Alemán and the bustling neighborhood, the Capilla de San Juan Bautista whispers tales of resilience and transformation. This 17th-century chapel, often obscured by street vendors, stands as a national treasure in the heart of old Tacubaya. Its location, atop a small hill, hints at its ancient origins, possibly a teocalli, a sacred ceremonial site. Built with simple materials – brick, lime, and sand – the Capilla de San Juan Bautista has seen centuries of change. Over time, delicate paintings and ornate decorations adorned its walls, enriching its humble beginnings. The present-day facade is believed to be the oldest part of the structure, a testament to its enduring presence. The interior and atrium, however, have undergone numerous renovations. Imagine the chapel in 1932, its access stairway completely vanished, swallowed by time. Then, in 1940, a small chapel was added to the south wall, altering the original floor plan. By 1952, the interior had transformed dramatically, with new ceilings and eliminated walls, reshaping the space we see today. Despite these changes, a remarkable treasure lies within: a very old Salomonic altarpiece from the latter half of the 17th century, holding five captivating paintings.
