Hidden within the solidified lava of the Teuhtli volcano lies the Capilla de San Antonio del Arbol. This isn’t just any chapel. It’s built into a natural hollow a stone pot formed millions of years ago.

The Capilla de San Antonio del Arbol holds a unique place in Mexico City’s history. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to a legend that blends ancient beliefs with Christian faith.

Legend speaks of a time long ago. Maguey workers heard a child’s cry echoing from within the stone pot. Days turned into weeks. The cry persisted. Finally a worker moved a stone revealing a Franciscan friar holding the Christ child. It was a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua. Thus he became the town’s patron saint.

This discovery led to the construction of the Capilla de San Antonio del Arbol. Built from the same volcanic rock the chapel protects this sacred hollow. The chapel’s origins are shrouded in mystery. The exact year of its construction remains unknown.

Every year on June 11th the town celebrates. Florists adorn the statue of Saint Anthony. A joyous procession returns the statue to the chapel. Vigils continue until the morning of June 13th.
