Whispers of faith echo within the Capilla de la Divina Providencia. This chapel stands as a testament to the growth and devotion of the Colonia del Valle community. The original small chapel, dating back to the early colonial period, couldn’t contain the burgeoning population. The residents, deeply committed to their faith, financed a new construction. This mirrors the funding of other religious buildings in the area. In 1968, architects Honorato Carrasco and Amaury Pérez de la Horta embarked on this sacred project. The Capilla de la Divina Providencia took shape with a semicircular design. This innovative approach maximized the plot’s potential. It created a plaza at the head of the block, emphasizing the chapel’s importance and providing a public gathering space. The construction, a labor of love and faith, spanned six years, reaching completion in 1974. The Capilla de la Divina Providencia emerged as a beacon of modernity. Its spatial distribution and construction techniques were truly avant-garde. The semicircular layout reflected the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council. It fostered a closer connection between the altar and the faithful. The chapel’s structure, based on a system of folds, one of nature’s strongest forms, imparted a striking visual appeal. Twelve large openings, adorned with stained glass, symbolize the twelve apostles at the Last Supper, adding to the symbolic richness of the space. Inside the Capilla de la Divina Providencia, a sense of serene simplicity prevails. The ornamentation is minimal, allowing the magnificent stained glass windows to take center stage. A dome illuminates the large wooden cross on the central altar. This cross rises from an ochre wall that seems to dramatically open up. The copper lining of the wall creates a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadows. Beyond its spiritual function, the Capilla de la Divina Providencia complex encompasses more. An apartment building for priests, classrooms, offices, and a dispensary are located at the back of the property, demonstrating the community’s commitment to holistic well-being.
