Hidden amidst the vibrant tapestry of Buenos Aires lies a sanctuary, the Capilla de Fátima. This unassuming three-story edifice in Villa Soldati holds a story of faith, devotion, and divine intervention. In the mid-20th century, Villa Soldati was a humble neighborhood of workers, including Portuguese immigrants. They faced the threat of expropriation by the government. Fearful, they turned to their faith and began a novena to Our Lady of Fátima. For nine days, they prayed. On the final day, a miracle occurred. The government abandoned its expropriation plans. A flock of white doves soared over the neighborhood, a symbol of hope in a place near a landfill. Overwhelmed with gratitude, the community resolved to build a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima. They approached Cardinal Santiago Copello, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, with their dream. He embraced their vision. He not only ordered the creation of the parish. He also provided a statue of Our Lady of Fátima, a gift from the Portuguese Ambassador, sent directly from Fátima, Portugal. The first Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Fátima in Argentina was formally established on July 25, 1951. The current Capilla de Fátima building was completed in 1957. Years later, in 1992, it was designated a diocesan sanctuary. From a humble first chapel, which housed that original statue from Portugal, to the current parish, the Capilla de Fátima has become a pillar of Villa Soldati. Even a nearby, very humble neighborhood took the name Fátima. Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, the future Pope Francis, recognized the importance of Capilla de Fátima. One of his last acts as Archbishop of Buenos Aires was to entrust the parish to the Marianist family. They had worked alongside the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the schools and chapels for decades. Bergoglio hoped their renewed efforts would transform the neighborhood. Today, numerous parishes in Argentina are dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima, including two more in the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires. But the Capilla de Fátima in Villa Soldati holds a special distinction. It was the first. Born near a landfill among the most humble, it stands as an epicenter of devotion. The Capilla de Fátima has become an integral part of the community, a testament to the power of faith and the enduring spirit of Villa Soldati.
