A fragment of bone a relic of Saint Francis Xavier rests within. Welcome to the Capela São Francisco Xavier a place steeped in history. This unassuming chapel in the Tijuca neighborhood holds centuries of stories. It began as a small hermitage in the 1580s. Father José de Anchieta himself is said to have played a part in its creation. The chapel’s dedication to Saint Francis Xavier likely came later after his canonization in 1622.

The Capela São Francisco Xavier isn’t just a pretty building. It’s a testament to the Jesuit influence in early Rio de Janeiro. Imagine Jesuit priests establishing a fazenda and engenho nearby. The chapel became the heart of the community. It served as a focal point for the developing Tijuca neighborhood. This is why the chapel played a vital social and religious role in the area’s growth.

The chapel has seen many changes over the years. The expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759 under the Marquis of Pombal significantly altered its fate. It became the Curato of São Francisco Xavier. Even the renowned Duque de Caxias a faithful parishioner supported renovations. You can still see the impact of those changes today.

Look closely. You’ll find plaques with quotes from both Caxias and Anchieta. Inside the chapel three priceless historical relics await. There’s the oldest baptismal font still in use in Rio dating back to around 1627. There’s also an image of Our Lady of Sorrows a gift from Empress Teresa Cristina in 1880. And of course the fragment of Saint Francis Xavier’s arm bone donated by Pope Pius XI in 1931. This donation happened when the parish was attached to the Basilica of St John Lateran in Rome. That made it unique in South America.

The Capela São Francisco Xavier continues to be a beloved spot. Many couples choose it as their wedding venue. It even received a special visit from Pope Francis in 2013 during World Youth Day. So next time you’re in Tijuca don’t miss this hidden gem. It’s more than just a chapel. It is a living museum of Rio’s rich history and faith.
