A stunning marble statue greets you. It’s Saint Peter of Alcantara. He stands proudly in the Capela de São Pedro. This chapel is more than just a place of worship. It’s a hidden gem within the University of Rio de Janeiro’s Palace.

The Capela de São Pedro’s story begins not in grandeur but in a hospital. It was built in 1852. The National Asylum for the Insane was here. Dom Pedro II himself founded it. For 92 years it served the mentally ill. Then it was abandoned.

In 1948 the IPHAN saved the building. It was gifted to the University of Brazil. The University needed a rector’s office. So the building was renovated. President Eurico Gaspar Dutra opened the renovated palace. The chapel became part of the University’s Forum of Science and Culture.

The Capela de São Pedro is a masterpiece of neoclassical design. Portuguese architects Domingos Monteiro and Joaquim Cândido Guilhobel designed it. José Maria Jacinto Rebelo a Brazilian architect also contributed. Its soaring ceilings and elegant lines are awe-inspiring. The chapel can hold 150 people. Its 136 square meters house beauty and history.

Johann Franz Pettrich sculpted the Saint Peter statue. The Carrara marble is breathtaking. The chapel has seen numerous films shot here. Weddings too have taken place within its hallowed walls.

Tragedy struck in 2011. A devastating fire engulfed the central part of the Palace. The Capela de São Pedro’s cupola caught fire. The ceilings of the second and third floors collapsed. The chapel’s restoration is costly. Eight million reais are needed.

Today the Capela de São Pedro stands as a testament to resilience. Its beauty survives. It continues to inspire visitors. It serves as a reminder that even after devastation beauty can return. The Capela de São Pedro is a symbol of hope. It’s a legacy that endures within Rio’s vibrant heart.
