From teacher’s academy to science hub, Çapa Fen Lisesi has witnessed a fascinating transformation. Çapa Fen Lisesi stands before you, a testament to the evolving landscape of education in Istanbul. Let’s journey back to March 16, 1848. Within these very walls, the “Darülmuallimin,” or Men’s Teacher School, first opened its doors. Established under the decree of Sultan Abdülmecid I, the school embarked on its mission to train future educators. This marked a pivotal moment in the Tanzimat era, a period of significant reforms in the Ottoman Empire. Çapa Fen Lisesi wasn’t always a science high school. Its initial purpose was to address the growing need for qualified teachers in secondary schools. In 1868, the focus shifted to elementary education. The institution was renamed “Darülmuallimin-i Rüştiye” and underwent renovations in 1870. The school expanded further in 1874, incorporating an “idadi” or middle school section. Çapa Fen Lisesi, then known as the “Istanbul Darülmuallimini,” became a comprehensive teacher training institution. The school’s physical structure also evolved. In 1900, the renowned architect Kemaleddin Bey redesigned the building, shaping the very space where countless students would pursue their academic dreams. The winds of change continued to blow through the early 20th century. The elementary section separated from Çapa Fen Lisesi in 1908, and the school achieved higher education status in 1912. Following the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the school transformed into the “Higher Teacher’s School of Istanbul.” The first graduating class emerged in 1927. The journey of Çapa Fen Lisesi has not been without its challenges. The school closed its doors between 1949 and 1950, only to reopen in 1951 with renewed vigor. However, with the rising popularity of engineering, enrollment declined. Despite becoming a boarding school in 1979 and offering scholarships, Çapa Fen Lisesi faced further transitions. It served as a teacher training center and temporarily housed other institutions. Finally, in 1991, Çapa Fen Lisesi became the Çapa Anatolian Teacher Training High School. It remained so until 2014 when it embraced its current identity as the Çapa Science High School. Today, Çapa Fen Lisesi continues its legacy of nurturing bright minds, fostering scientific inquiry, and contributing to Turkey’s educational landscape. The spirit of innovation and adaptation that has shaped Çapa Fen Lisesi for over a century and a half resonates within these walls. The school stands as a proud symbol of educational evolution, reflecting the changing tides of time while remaining committed to shaping future generations.
