From the ashes of a vanished cape rises the modern Cap Pinède. Can you imagine a time when this bustling crossroads was a 40-meter high headland? A sentinel overlooking the Marseille harbor.

Cap Pinède wasn’t always a traffic interchange. For centuries it served as a strategic vantage point. A military battery stood guard here from the 17th century. It was even fortified mid-19th century. A Chappe telegraph relay connected Paris and Toulon from this very spot in the 1820s. Imagine the coded messages flashing across the landscape. News traveling at the speed of sight.

But the story of Cap Pinède is one of transformation. At the end of the 19th century the harbor expanded. The construction of the Pinède basin began. The cape’s tip was gradually eroded. Its height reduced for the development of the port.

The early 20th century brought further changes. A power plant was built. It used lignite brought through the Galerie de la Mer from Gardanne. This necessitated leveling a significant portion of Cap Pinède. The dramatic reduction in altitude was not without consequence. The Fraissinet ramp needed to be diverted. A railway tunnel connecting the Pinède dock to Arenc station was eliminated.

The power plant played a significant role in Marseille’s electrification. It was a crucial step in the city’s industrial development. Yet eventually it became obsolete. The plant was decommissioned. Its three imposing chimneys were demolished. Their demise marked the end of an era. Today only the monumental entrance pavilions remain. They stand as silent witnesses to the industrial past. They are a testament to the work of architect Joseph Madeline.

Today’s Cap Pinède is a far cry from its former self. The railway and the Littoral motorway cut through it. A major interchange occupies much of its former footprint. Yet the name endures. It serves as a reminder of a dramatic transformation. The story of a cape that was reduced but not forgotten. The name of Cap Pinède still echoes in the streets and avenues that now stand on what was once a prominent headland.
