Caow Eng Bio is locally known as Klenteng Tanjung Benoa. It is one of Bali’s oldest Chinese temples. For centuries, it has stood majestically at the end of Jalan Segara Ening. Its bright red walls and ornate carvings tell a story of faith and resilience.
Step closer to the entrance. See the wooden doors. Fearsome war deities are painted on them. They stand guard. They protect the sacred space within Caow Eng Bio.
Entering Caow Eng Bio, you’ll find a main building showcasing beautiful Chinese architecture. Prayer rooms await you. A large ash cauldron sits on a pedestal. Gigantic red candles stand tall. They create an atmosphere of reverence and peace.
Look around. You will see wooden plaques. They bear scripture verses of wisdom in Chinese and Indonesian. Marble engravings honor those who helped build Caow Eng Bio. Their contributions are forever etched in stone.

Notice that the main shrine is shared by Goddess Shui Wei and the 108 Brothers. This is unique. To the right is a shrine for Mazu. She is the sea goddess. The left shrine holds male gods. These include Guan Gong, Nezha, and the Monkey God.
Outside, you will find lion heads used for lion dances. They are kept in a glass enclosure. A joss holder sits in front for offerings.
On either side of the main building are smaller halls. One enshrines Buddhist sculptures. The other is dedicated to the Stove God.
Opposite Caow Eng Bio is a shrine to a dragon in a boat. Next to it is a theatre. These elements add to the temple’s unique charm.
How old is Caow Eng Bio? It is said to be around 300 years old. A stele to the left of the temple dates back to 1882. It is from the Qing Emperor Guan Xu’s reign. This artifact is remarkable. It shows the temple’s long history.
