Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College, a place brimming with history and opportunity, stands before you. Founded in 1928, this school was once East Camberwell Domestic Arts School, known fondly as “Mangarra”. The name Mangarra continues to be embraced by the school’s strong alumni association, a testament to the strong bond these women share with their alma mater. The name changed several times throughout the 1950s, finally adopting the name Canterbury Girls’ High School in 1961. After a school-wide consultation, the name was changed in 1989 to Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College. The historical signage, honor boards, and the buildings themselves remind current students that they are part of a rich legacy.
The first principle of the college, Miss Kate Flynn, chose the school motto, “Fervet Opus”, which means “the work is fervent”. This motto appears on the school’s blazer pocket. It represents the dedication and hard work that students and teachers share within the walls of this school. Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College continues to be a high-performing school, renowned for its VCE results.
