The Canterbury Christadelphian Hall provides a space for the Christadelphians. They are a worldwide community of Bible students. Their fellowship is based on a common understanding of the Scriptures. Christadelphians believe that salvation is attained through faith in Christ. Through faith, they are baptized into Christ for forgiveness of sins. They thereby participate in the promises to Abraham to inherit the earth forever.
But who are the Christadelphians? They consider themselves a modern revival of the faith of the first-century apostles. Their beliefs rest solely on the teachings of the Bible. A key practice is reading the Bible every day. They read the Old Testament once a year. They also read the New Testament twice. This makes them very familiar with Bible Truth.
The name “Christadelphian” is from Greek words meaning “Brethren in Christ”. The Bible uses this term to identify true believers who do God’s will. By using this Scriptural name, the community constantly remembers the high ideals that Christ set.
Christadelphians don’t claim to have received new revelations. They maintain that the Bible can guide a person to salvation. They follow the example of the Apostles. There is no paid ministry or elaborate ceremonies. Each ecclesia or congregation is autonomous. Members manage their own affairs. Like the “elders” of New Testament times, they preside at meetings.
Every Sunday, they meet to remember Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. This meeting is the “breaking of bread”. It includes hymns, prayers, readings, and an exhortation. Bread and wine are shared among all members. Voluntary collections cover expenses.
Like Jesus’ early disciples, Canterbury Christadelphians proclaim the Gospel. They share “the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ”. They also instruct their children and young people in Sunday Schools and Youth Groups. They promote a life of faith, prayer, and obedience to Christ’s commands.
The Christadelphian movement began with John Thomas. He was a medical doctor who independently studied the Bible. He realized that Christendom had strayed from the Bible. In 1848, he published “Elpis Israel”. It contained his discoveries from his Bible study. Thomas revived the Truth from false teachings. He taught that Eternal Life is a gift from God. Jesus will bestow it upon his followers at his second coming. He will also set up the Kingdom of God. This Kingdom will be on Earth when Christ returns. The righteous will enter this kingdom and have eternal life. They will “reign on the earth” with Jesus Christ as King. The destiny of the wicked is destruction, not eternal torment. “Hell” is the grave, where the unrighteous will remain forever. Death came into the world because of sin.
As you stand before the Canterbury Christadelphian Hall, remember its purpose. It is a place of faith. It is a place of community. It is a place where the teachings of the Bible guide daily life. It is a place of brotherhood in Christ.
