In the heart of Leytonstone, stands a beacon of faith and community: Cann Hall and Harrow Green Baptist Church. Don’t let its unassuming exterior fool you. This church holds a history as rich and layered as the community it serves. Cann Hall and Harrow Green Baptist Church’s story begins not within its walls, but in a humble barn on Cann Hall Lane. In 1878, a local farmer, moved by his faith, invited his workers to gather for non-conformist worship on Tuesday evenings. They sat on rough planks, balanced on onion and potato baskets, their shared faith warming the earthen floor. The gatherings blossomed, soon extending to Sundays and becoming known as the “Christian Band.” This burgeoning community, yearning for a dedicated space, pooled their resources to purchase land and erect their own church. In June 1887, Cann Hall Baptist Church officially opened its doors. Over time, a group from Cann Hall Baptist Church branched out, forming Harrow Green Baptist Church. These two congregations, though separate entities, worked side-by-side, their shared faith a powerful bond. In 1976, they reunited, merging their histories and identities to become Cann Hall and Harrow Green Baptist Church, as we know it today. For over 130 years, Cann Hall and Harrow Green Baptist Church has been a cornerstone of the community. It has witnessed countless baptisms, weddings, and funerals, marking the milestones of life for generations. The church continues to embrace its mission, extending a hand of welcome to all who seek fellowship, support, and a connection to faith.
