King Carlos I’s legacy lives on. Here before us stands the Canis de Dom Carlos. It’s a poignant reminder of a turbulent era. A time of both grandeur and tragedy.

King Carlos I ruled Portugal during a period of immense upheaval. His reign was marked by economic instability. The country faced bankruptcy twice. Social unrest was rampant. Republican groups openly challenged the monarchy. The 1890 British Ultimatum further diminished Portugal’s influence. It forced the king to cede African territories. This act fueled national resentment.

Carlos attempted reforms. He appointed Joao Franco as prime minister. Franco’s strong-arm tactics aimed to centralize power. However his methods only increased opposition. The king’s efforts to stabilize the nation ultimately failed.

Beyond politics Carlos I fostered arts and sciences. He was fascinated by the sea. He earned the nickname “the Oceanographer”. He led deep-sea expeditions on his yacht Amelia. He published his marine research findings. He championed Portuguese history and culture. He participated in events commemorating Prince Henry the Navigator. He also honored the poet Joao de Deus.

Tragedy struck on February 1 1908. King Carlos and his family were returning to Lisbon. As their carriage passed through Terreiro do Paco shots rang out. Assassins Alfredo Luis da Costa and Manuel Buica targeted the king. They were republican revolutionaries. They aimed to end the monarchy. The attack killed Carlos instantly. His heir Prince Luis Filipe also died. Queen Amelie and Prince Manuel survived. This event became known as the Lisbon Regicide. It shattered the nation. It marked the beginning of the end for the Portuguese monarchy.

The Canis de Dom Carlos stands as a silent witness. It stands as a reminder of this pivotal moment. It stands as a testament to the complexities of Carlos I’s reign. A reign of ambition reform and ultimately violent change. A chapter of Portuguese history. A chapter we must never forget.
