Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Istanbul, stands the Canfeda Hatun Cami. This mosque whispers tales of a remarkable woman, Canfeda Saliha Hatun. She served as a lady-in-waiting to Nurbanu Sultan and her son, Sultan Murad III. Canfeda Hatun Cami is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a testament to a woman’s ambition, influence, and devotion.

Canfeda Hatun, also known as Saliha, wasn’t just a servant. She rose through the ranks to become the mistress housekeeper of the Imperial Harem. Her influence extended beyond the harem walls. She played a significant role in palace affairs, wielding power that sometimes rivaled even high-ranking officials. The Canfeda Hatun Cami, commissioned by Canfeda herself in 1584, showcases her remarkable rise.

The mosque, located in the Edirnekapı district of Istanbul, initially included a primary school and a public drinking fountain. These additions reflect Canfeda’s commitment to education and public welfare. The mosque’s construction cost was estimated at two million aspers, a staggering sum that speaks to Canfeda’s substantial wealth. This fortune, however, wasn’t solely dedicated to personal gain. Canfeda established a charitable foundation, using its revenues to fund projects like the Canfeda Hatun Cami and other public works. This philanthropy further cemented her legacy within the community.

Canfeda’s power and influence, however, weren’t without their drawbacks. Her wealth and connections attracted animosity, particularly from the Janissaries. In 1593, they demanded her execution during a mutiny. Sultan Murad III intervened, saving her life. Despite these challenges, Canfeda continued to exert influence within the Ottoman court. She even managed to secure a doubled stipend in her retirement to support her ongoing public works projects.

The Canfeda Hatun Cami we see today isn’t exactly the same structure Canfeda originally commissioned. It has undergone several renovations. The most recent restorations, completed between 1982 and 1989, focused on the ceiling and minaret. These efforts ensured the preservation of Canfeda’s legacy, allowing future generations to appreciate her story. The mosque’s interior, spanning 290 square meters, welcomes worshippers to this day. The courtyard, measuring 260 square meters, provides a tranquil space for reflection.

Canfeda Hatun’s story is a blend of ambition, intrigue, and philanthropy. The Canfeda Hatun Cami stands as a physical embodiment of her remarkable life. So next time you gaze upon this mosque, remember the woman behind the stones. Remember Canfeda, the lady-in-waiting who left an indelible mark on Ottoman history.
