High on a mountain plateau stands Çandır Kalesi. Its imposing silhouette cuts against the sky. This isn’t just any castle. It’s a silent witness to centuries of history.

Çandır Kalesi boasts a rich past. It may have been the very castle where Byzantine Emperor Zeno sought refuge in 475 AD. He fled his capital amidst political turmoil finding temporary safety within its walls. This is a little-known fact adding intrigue to this remarkable site.

The castle’s strategic location made it incredibly important. From the 12th to the 14th centuries it was a key stronghold of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. Its position controlled vital roads linking central Anatolia and the important city of Lampron. Çandır Kalesi was a vital hub of power. It served as a residence for Armenian nobles kings and even the renowned diplomat Sempad the Constable. He lived here. He even built a church here.

The castle’s architecture is striking. It’s built on a natural plateau high in the Toros Mountains. The almost vertical cliffs provided natural defenses negating the need for extensive walls. Access was via a narrow 140-step staircase carved into the cliff face. Imagine hauling supplies up that. A parallel inclined plane likely helped with transport. Today the remains of a two-story residence and a church stand as testaments to the castle’s past. The church dates back to 1251. It was built by Sempad the Constable in honor of his father. The exquisitely polished stones are still visible. The intricate craftsmanship is a testament to the builders’ skill.

Even today Çandır Kalesi is accessible. It is however challenging to reach. You need a 4WD to navigate the mountain roads. The climb is rewarding. The castle stands proudly overlooking the surrounding landscape. It’s a captivating blend of nature and history. A silent guardian of secrets. A beacon of the past. A reminder of the people who lived and ruled here. The journey here is as fascinating as the castle itself.
