Gazing up at Canberra House, one can almost hear the echoes of history whispering from its walls. Canberra House, also known as the Former Admiralty House, sits atop a hill in Sembawang. This grand, two-story structure began its life in 1939. It served as the residence of the Commodore Superintendent of the Royal Navy Dockyard. Originally named after the nearby Canberra Road, Canberra House reflects the Arts and Crafts architectural style. The house boasts exposed brickwork on the upper story, contrasting beautifully with the pale stucco walls below. Its high-hipped roof, covered in French terracotta tiles, adds to its stately presence. Canberra House has witnessed a fascinating evolution through time. It served as a strategic planning headquarters during World War II. After the war, Japanese prisoners of war constructed a swimming pool on the grounds. The house then transitioned through several names, reflecting the changing tides of Singapore’s military history. It was known as Nelson House, then Admiralty House, and briefly as ANZUK House during the tripartite force’s presence. A hidden piece of history lies beneath Canberra House. In 1990, workers unearthed a small underground bunker. This bunker, complete with a basic toilet and colonial light fittings, likely served as a bomb shelter. Canberra House stands as a testament to Singapore’s rich past. It reminds us of the significant role this island nation played in global events. Today, Canberra House is part of the Bukit Canberra integrated community hub, poised to serve future generations.
