From 1802 to the late 1980s ships unloaded treasures. Tobacco timber and even elephants arrived. The name Canary Wharf itself? A nod to the Canary Islands. But time marches on. Containerisation changed everything. The docks fell silent by 1980. A ghost of its former self. Then an idea. Transform this forgotten place. Michael von Clemm envisioned back offices. G Ware Travelstead added to the dream. A new financial center was born. The London Docklands Development Corporation stepped in. They built the Docklands Light Railway. Inexpensive and efficient. It connected this burgeoning district to the rest of London.
Olympia & York a Canadian company. They took the reins. Skidmore Owings & Merrill master-planned the transformation. Yorke Rosenberg Mardall advised. Koetter Kim too. Construction roared to life in 1988. One Canada Square rose. A symbol of rebirth. A breathtaking 235 meters of ambition. The tallest in the UK at the time. But Canary Wharf didn’t stay down. In 1995 a new consortium invested. Paul Reichmann of Olympia & York became chairman. Canary Wharf went public in 1999. It became Canary Wharf Group. The Jubilee Line Extension helped. Much-delayed but critical. The property market recovered. Demand for Grade A office space soared.
Today Canary Wharf stands tall. Six of the UK’s ten tallest buildings are here. Landmark Pinnacle a residential giant. The tallest in the UK and Western Europe.
